Placanica is a town in Calabria, Italy, located in the province of Reggio Calabria. It is situated at an altitude of 320 meters (1,050 feet) above sea level, in the foothills of the Aspromonte mountains. The town has a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Placanica has a long and rich history, dating back to the ancient Greeks. The town was founded in the 6th century BC, and was originally known as "Placanum". It was later conquered by the Romans, who renamed it "Placanica". In the Middle Ages, Placanica was part of the Byzantine Empire, and later the Kingdom of Naples. The town was finally incorporated into the Kingdom of Italy in 1861. Placanica has a number of historical and cultural landmarks, including the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, which was built in the 16th century, and the Palazzo Vescovile, which was built in the 18th century.
