It is situated at the confluence of the Cumberland River and Clear Creek, approximately 100 miles southeast of Lexington. The city has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Pineville was founded in 1873 and named after Colonel William Pine, a prominent local landowner. It has a rich history and heritage, having been a major center for coal mining and timber production in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
