The town has a humid continental climate with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Pine Plains was originally settled by the Dutch in the 17th century and was known as "Pine Bush" until 1836. The town's heritage is reflected in its many historic buildings, including the Pine Plains Reformed Church (1764) and the Pine Plains Inn (1812).
