The village is situated on the left bank of the Thoré river, at the foot of the Montagne Noire. The climate is temperate, with average temperatures ranging from 10°C in January to 25°C in July. The village has a rich history, dating back to the Middle Ages. It was once a stronghold of the Cathars, and was besieged by Simon de Montfort during the Albigensian Crusade. The village's heritage includes the 13th-century church of Saint-Pierre, the 14th-century castle of Augmontel, and the 15th-century bridge over the Thoré river.
