The village was founded in 1833 by a group of settlers from New York. The name "Paw Paw" comes from the Native American word for "papaw", a type of fruit that is native to the area. The village is home to several historical sites, including the Paw Paw Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The village is also home to several parks and recreation areas, including the Paw Paw Riverfront Park and the Van Buren County Fairgrounds.
