Palanas is a municipality in the province of Leyte, Philippines, located at the northwestern tip of Leyte Island. It is also known as Palampas or Paljampas. The town has a tropical rainforest climate with an average temperature of 27.2°C and an average annual rainfall of 1,960 mm. Palanas was founded in 1768 by Spanish missionaries and was originally named Palampas, which means "resting place" in the local dialect. The town's name was later changed to Palanas in honor of a local chieftain. Palanas has a rich cultural heritage and is home to several historical landmarks, including the Palanas Church, which was built in 1772 and is one of the oldest churches in Leyte.
