Ovidiopol’, a town in Odessa Oblast, Ukraine, is situated at the mouth of the Dniester River, about 40 kilometers west of Odessa. Ovidiopol’ has a humid continental climate, with hot summers and cold winters. The town was founded in 1793 by Russian Prince Grigory Potemkin and named after the Roman poet Ovid, who was exiled to the area in the 1st century AD. Ovidiopol’ has a rich history and heritage, including a fortress built by the Russians in the 18th century, a museum dedicated to Ovid, and a number of churches and monasteries.
