Orël, also known as Orel, is a city in Russia located in the western part of the country at the confluence of the Oka and Orlik rivers. The city has a temperate continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. Orël was founded in 1566 as a fortress to protect the southern border of the Russian state. The city played an important role in the Russian Civil War and was the site of a major battle in 1919. Orël is home to a number of historical and cultural attractions, including the Church of the Epiphany, the Orel Regional Museum of Local Lore, and the Orël State University.
