Okolona is a town in Chickasaw County, Mississippi, United States, with coordinates 34.0017800 latitude and -88.7553300 longitude. It is located in the northern part of the state, about 30 miles (48 km) northeast of Tupelo. The town has a population of about 2,500 people and is known for its historic downtown area, which features a number of shops and restaurants. The town was founded in 1857 and was named after the Chickasaw word for "big prairie". The town's history is closely tied to the railroad industry, and it was once a major shipping point for cotton and other agricultural products. Okolona is also home to the Okolona College, a historically black college that was founded in 1872. The town's climate is humid subtropical, with hot, humid summers and mild winters.
