The city is situated just east of the state capital of Lansing and is part of the Greater Lansing metropolitan area. The city has a population of approximately 23,000 people and is known for its excellent schools, parks, and recreation opportunities. Okemos is also home to Michigan State University's College of Veterinary Medicine. The city experiences a humid continental climate with warm, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. The city was founded in 1836 by a group of settlers from New York. The city was named after the Ojibwe word for "thunder" or "noise".
