Norristown is a borough in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, United States, situated along the Schuylkill River approximately 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Center City, Philadelphia. The borough has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and cold, dry winters. Norristown was founded in 1784 by John Potts, a Quaker who purchased the land from the Lenape Native Americans. The borough played an important role in the American Revolutionary War, and was the site of the Battle of Germantown in 1777. Norristown is home to a number of historic buildings, including the Montgomery County Courthouse, which was built in 1784 and is the oldest continuously operating courthouse in the United States.
