Nassau is a hamlet in the town of North Greenbush in Rensselaer County, New York, United States. It is located at the intersection of U.S. Route 4 and New York State Route 150, approximately 10 miles (16 km) east of Albany. The hamlet has a population of about 1,500 people and is home to a number of businesses and organizations, including the Nassau Volunteer Fire Department, the Nassau Public Library, and the Nassau Reformed Church. The weather in Nassau is humid continental, with hot summers and cold winters. The average temperature in July is 75°F (24°C), while the average temperature in January is 25°F (-4°C). Nassau was first settled by Dutch farmers in the 17th century. The hamlet was originally known as "Nassau Mills" after the nearby Nassau Mills dam on the Poesten Kill. The dam was built in 1790 and provided power for a number of mills in the area. Nassau was incorporated as a village in 1856, but it was later annexed by the town of North Greenbush in 1920.
