Mykolayiv, formerly known as Nikolaev, is a historic city in southern Ukraine located on the Southern Bug River near its confluence with the Dnieper River estuary, approximately 600 km (370 mi) south of Kyiv. The city has a humid continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. Mykolayiv was founded in the 18th century as a shipbuilding center and naval base and played a significant role in the Russian Empire's Black Sea Fleet.
