Mtsensk, also known as MCENSK, is a city in Orjol Oblast, Russia, located on the Zusha River, 51 kilometers southwest of Oryol. The city has a population of 40,882 (2021 census). The average temperature in January is -9.2°C (15.4°F), and the average temperature in July is 18.8°C (65.8°F). Mtsensk was founded in 1146 and was first mentioned in the Nikon Chronicle. The city was an important trade center in the 17th and 18th centuries. In 1778, Mtsensk was granted city status by Catherine the Great. The city is home to a number of historical and cultural landmarks, including the Church of the Intercession (17th century), the Church of the Assumption (18th century), and the Mtsensk Museum of Local Lore.
