Mount Vernon has a humid continental climate, with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. The city was founded in 1805 and named after George Washington's estate, Mount Vernon. Mount Vernon is home to several historical sites, including the Kenyon College campus, the Ohio State Reformatory, and the Knox County Historical Society Museum. The city is also home to a number of parks and recreation areas, including the Mount Vernon Reservoir and the Kokosing Gap Trail.
