It is located in the northeastern part of the state, just west of the Hudson River and across from Manhattan. The weather in Moonachie is humid subtropical, with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. The borough was founded in 1864 and was named after the Lenape Native American word for "island". Moonachie has a rich history and heritage, and is home to several historic sites, including the Moonachie Reformed Church, which was built in 1837.
