Monticello is a city in Jefferson County, Florida, United States, with a population of 2,432 as of the 2020 census. It is located in the northern part of the state, about 25 miles (40 km) east of Tallahassee. The city was founded in 1827 and named after Thomas Jefferson's estate, Monticello. The climate is humid subtropical, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Monticello is known for its historic downtown district, which includes many buildings that date back to the 19th century. The city is also home to the Monticello Opera House, which was built in 1888 and is one of the oldest continuously operating theaters in Florida.
