Montecchio Maggiore is a town in the province of Vicenza, Veneto, Italy. It is located on the slopes of the Monti Berici hills, about 10 kilometers (6 miles) northeast of Vicenza. The town has a population of about 23,000 people. The climate is humid subtropical, with hot summers and cool winters. The town was founded in the 10th century by the Benedictine monks of the Abbey of San Pietro in Vicenza. It was later ruled by the Scaligeri family of Verona and the Republic of Venice. In the 19th century, the town became a center of the silk industry. Today, the town is a popular tourist destination, known for its historic center, its churches, and its museums.
