The town was founded by the Romans in the 1st century BC, and was known as "Castrum Album". The town was later conquered by the Moors in the 8th century, and was known as "Al-Muntabar". The town was reconquered by the Christians in the 13th century, and was renamed "Montaberner". The town has a number of historic buildings, including the church of San Miguel, which was built in the 16th century.
