The town was founded in 1966 as a base for the construction of the Plesetsk Cosmodrome and was closed to the public in 1973. The town is home to approximately 30,000 people and is the center of the Mirnyy Urban Okrug. The climate in Mirnyy is subarctic, with long, cold winters and short, cool summers. The average temperature in January is -15°C (5°F), while the average temperature in July is +15°C (59°F). The town has a rich history and heritage, being the birthplace of the Soviet space program.
