The city has a humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Middlesboro was founded in 1886 as a coal mining town and was named after the Middlesborough iron and steel works in England. The city's heritage is closely tied to the coal mining industry, and it is home to the Kentucky Coal Mining Museum.
