Middlebury, Vermont is a town in Addison County, Vermont, United States. It is located in the Champlain Valley, on the Otter Creek, about 30 miles (48 km) south of Burlington. The town was founded in 1761 by a group of settlers from Connecticut. It was named after Middlebury, Connecticut, which was the hometown of many of the settlers. The town grew rapidly in the 19th century, thanks to its location on the Champlain Canal. Middlebury is home to Middlebury College, a private liberal arts college founded in 1800. The town is also home to several other educational institutions, including the Vermont Folklife Center and the Vermont Institute of Natural Science. Middlebury has a humid continental climate, with warm, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. The average temperature in January is 18 °F (-8 °C), while the average temperature in July is 72 °F (22 °C). The town receives an average of 42 inches (107 cm) of precipitation per year.
