The village was originally known as "Center" but was renamed "Michigan Center" in 1871 to avoid confusion with other towns of the same name. Michigan Center is home to a number of historic buildings, including the Michigan Center Depot, which was built in 1872 and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
