The climate is temperate, with an average temperature of 18.5 °C (65.3 °F) and an average annual precipitation of 860 millimeters (34 inches). The town was founded in 1530 by Spanish conquistadors, and its name comes from the Nahuatl word "mexticacan", which means "place of the moon". The town is known for its historical architecture, including the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, which was built in the 18th century.
