It is located southwest of Detroit and is bordered by the cities of Allen Park, Dearborn, and Southgate. The city was founded in 1921 and was named after Melvin D. Baldwin, a local real estate developer. Melvindale has a humid continental climate with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. The city is home to a diverse population, with a significant Arab American community.
