Massapequa is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 21,691 at the 2010 census. Massapequa is located on the South Shore of Long Island, approximately 30 miles (48 km) east of Manhattan. The climate is humid continental, with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. The area was originally inhabited by the Massapequa Indians, who were part of the Algonquian-speaking Lenape tribe. The first European settlers arrived in the 17th century, and the area was known as South Oyster Bay until the late 19th century, when it was renamed Massapequa. The name is derived from the Algonquian word "Massapequa," which means "great water" or "large pond."
