It has a hot desert climate with an average temperature of 25.3°C and average annual precipitation of 243mm. The city has a rich history dating back to ancient times, with archaeological evidence of settlements from the Elamite, Achaemenid, and Sassanid periods. It is also known for its petroleum industry, with the first oil well in Iran being drilled near the city in 1908.
