The town has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Marmaduke was founded in 1882 and named after John Sappington Marmaduke, a Confederate general in the Civil War. The town is home to several historic buildings, including the Marmaduke Courthouse, which was built in 1895. Marmaduke is also home to the Marmaduke Municipal Airport.
