The city has a humid continental climate with hot summers and cold winters, and its average temperature ranges from -7°C (19°F) in January to 25°C (77°F) in July. The city was founded in 1879 by a group of German immigrants and was named after the Mandan Native American tribe, who had lived in the area for centuries. Mandan is home to several historical sites, including the Fort Mandan, which was built by the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1804-05.
