Macon, Georgia, known colloquially as "The Heart of Georgia," is located in central Georgia at the fall line of the Ocmulgee River, about 85 miles (137 km) southeast of Atlanta. The city has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Macon was founded in 1823 and served as the state capital from 1825 to 1868. The city has a rich history and heritage, including being a major center of the cotton industry and the home of several prominent figures in American history, such as President Jimmy Carter.
