Lyman was founded in 1873 and named after Judge John H. Lyman, a railroad executive. The town is home to the Lyman Depot Museum, which houses a collection of railroad artifacts. Lyman is also home to the Tyger River Dam, which was built in 1925 to provide hydroelectric power to the area.
