Loei, the capital of Loei Province in northeastern Thailand, is located in the Loei Valley, surrounded by mountains and the Mekong River. With a tropical savanna climate, it experiences hot and humid summers and cool and dry winters. Loei's history dates back to the 15th century, when it was known as Muang Lai. It became a major trade center during the Ayutthaya period and later played a significant role in the Laotian Civil War.
