The city was founded in 1854 by Mormon pioneers. The pioneers named the city after James LaVerkin, a Mormon missionary who was killed by Native Americans in 1850. The city is home to a number of historical sites, including the LaVerkin Heritage Museum and the LaVerkin Cemetery.
