It is located on the North Shore of Lake Michigan, approximately 28 miles (45 km) north of Chicago. The city has a humid continental climate, with hot summers and cold winters. Lake Forest was founded in 1857 by a group of wealthy Chicagoans who sought to create a summer retreat on the shores of Lake Michigan. The city quickly became a popular destination for wealthy families, and many of the city's original mansions and estates still stand today. Lake Forest is home to a number of cultural institutions, including the Lake Forest Symphony Orchestra, the Lake Forest College, and the Gorton Community Center.
