Lafayette, Indiana, is a city in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, United States. It is located in the west-central part of the state, about 60 miles (97 km) northwest of Indianapolis. The city has a population of 70,000 (2019) and is the county seat of Tippecanoe County. Lafayette is the home of Purdue University, a major research university with an enrollment of over 40,000 students. The city is also home to several other colleges and universities, including Ivy Tech Community College and Harrison College. Lafayette has a humid continental climate with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. The average temperature in July is 75 °F (24 °C), and the average temperature in January is 25 °F (-4 °C). Lafayette was founded in 1825 by William Digby and John Purdue. The city was named after the Marquis de Lafayette, a French general who fought in the American Revolutionary War. Lafayette was incorporated as a city in 1853. The city's economy is based on manufacturing, education, and healthcare. Lafayette is home to several major manufacturing companies, including Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Caterpillar Inc., and Alcoa. The city is also home to several hospitals and medical centers, including IU Health Arnett Hospital and Franciscan Health Lafayette East Hospital. Lafayette has a rich cultural heritage. The city is home to several museums, including the Tippecanoe County Historical Association Museum and the Haan Mansion Museum of Indiana Art. Lafayette is also home to several theaters, including the Lafayette Theater and the Long Center for the Performing Arts.
