La Verne is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. It is located in the San Gabriel Valley region of Southern California, approximately 30 miles (48 kilometers) east of downtown Los Angeles. The city has a population of around 31,000 and is known for its tree-lined streets, historic downtown, and proximity to the Angeles National Forest. La Verne was founded in 1887 by a group of settlers from the Midwest and was named after the La Verne Ranch, which was owned by Louis Prevost. The city's early economy was based on agriculture, but it later transitioned to manufacturing and retail. La Verne is home to the University of La Verne, a private liberal arts college founded in 1891. The city's climate is characterized by warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters.
