Koumac, Province Nord, New Caledonia

Koumac, also known as Kumac or Kumak, is a commune in the Province Nord of New Caledonia, located on the west coast of the island of Grande Terre at the mouth of the Koumac River. The commune has a tropical climate with an average temperature of 26°C (79°F) and an average rainfall of 1,500 mm (59 in) per year. Koumac was founded in 1861 as a penal colony and was later developed as a mining town. The commune is home to a number of historical and cultural sites, including the Koumac Mission, which was founded in 1863 by the Marist Brothers.
