Koontz Lake, Indiana is a town in North Township, Starke County, Indiana, United States. It is located at 41°25′05″N 86°29′09″W, about 10 miles (16 km) west of Plymouth and 20 miles (32 km) east of Valparaiso. The town has a population of 1,629 people (as of the 2020 census) and a total area of 1.29 square miles (3.34 km2). The town was founded in 1853 by George Koontz, who built a sawmill on the shore of Koontz Lake. The town grew rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as it became a popular summer resort destination. The town is home to a number of historic buildings, including the Koontz Lake Hotel, which was built in 1873 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The town also has a strong German heritage, which is reflected in its architecture and culture.
