It has a humid continental climate with warm summers and cold, snowy winters. Kirovsk was founded in 1931 as a settlement for workers at a nearby chemical plant and was granted city status in 1953. It is home to several historical and cultural landmarks, including the Church of the Holy Trinity and the Kirovsk City Museum.
