The town has a humid continental climate, with warm summers and cold, snowy winters. Kholm was first mentioned in the chronicles in 1144 and was an important trade center in the Middle Ages. The town was also a major center of the Old Believers, a religious group that split from the Russian Orthodox Church in the 17th century.
