Kapustin Yar, also known as Kapustin Jar, is a town in Astrakhan Oblast, Russia, located in the southeast of the country near the Caspian Sea. The town has a humid continental climate with cold, snowy winters and hot, dry summers. Kapustin Yar was founded in 1946 as a closed city for the Soviet military and was used as a testing ground for ballistic missiles and space rockets. Today, the town is home to a number of research institutes and is also a popular tourist destination due to its historical significance and natural beauty.
