Junction City is a city in Geary County, Kansas, United States. It is located at the junction of the Republican and Smoky Hill Rivers, approximately 115 miles west of Kansas City. The city has a humid continental climate with hot, humid summers and cold, dry winters. Junction City was founded in 1857 as a stagecoach stop on the Oregon Trail. It was named for its location at the junction of the two rivers. The city played a significant role in the Civil War, serving as a supply depot for Union forces. After the war, Junction City became a major railroad center. The city's heritage is reflected in its many historic buildings, including the Geary County Courthouse, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
