The borough is located in central Pennsylvania, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Harrisburg, the state capital. The climate in Jonestown is humid continental, with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. The average temperature in January is 28.9 °F (-1.7 °C), while the average temperature in July is 75.3 °F (24.1 °C). The borough was founded in 1762 by John Jones, a Welsh immigrant. Jonestown was a major center of the iron industry in the 19th century, and the borough is home to several historic iron furnaces and forges.
