The borough was founded in 1806 by John Peter Shindel and was originally known as Shindel's Ferry. The borough's name was changed to Jersey Shore in 1826. Jersey Shore is home to several historical sites, including the Jersey Shore Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
