Jelgava, also known as Mitau, is a city in Latvia, situated on the Lielupe River, 41 km southwest of Riga. The city has a humid continental climate with warm, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Jelgava was founded in 1265 by the Livonian Order as a stronghold against the pagan Semigallians. It was later ruled by the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Russian Empire before becoming part of independent Latvia in 1918. Jelgava is home to several historical and cultural landmarks, including the Jelgava Palace, the Jelgava Cathedral, and the Jelgava Museum of History and Art.
