Istok, Buryatiya, Russia, also known as Исток, is a rural locality in the Kabansky District of the Republic of Buryatia. It is located in the Selenga River Valley, at the confluence of the Selenga and Istok Rivers, at an elevation of 460 meters (1,509 feet) above sea level. The climate is humid continental, with warm, humid summers and cold, dry winters. The average temperature in January is -22°C (-7.6°F), and the average temperature in July is +18°C (64.4°F). The annual precipitation is about 450 millimeters (17.7 inches). The history of Istok dates back to the 18th century, when it was founded as a Cossack settlement. In the 19th century, it became a major trading center for the Buryat people. Today, Istok is a small village with a population of about 1,000 people. The main economic activities are agriculture and tourism. The village is home to a number of historical and cultural landmarks, including the Istok Church, which was built in 1820.
