Irondale is a city in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States, with a population of 12,349 as of the 2010 census. It is located 8 miles (13 km) east of Birmingham and is part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Irondale was founded in 1887 as a coal mining town and was named after the iron ore that was found in the area. The city has a rich history and heritage, and is home to several historic landmarks, including the Irondale Furnace, which was built in 1883 and is now a museum.
