The climate is humid subtropical, with hot summers and mild winters. The city was founded in 1887 by the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, and was named after Iowa Park, Illinois. The city's heritage is primarily agricultural, but it has also been home to a number of oil and gas companies.
