It is situated at the confluence of the Little River and the Mountain Fork River, approximately 12 miles (19 km) from the Arkansas border. The city has a humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Idabel was founded in 1887 and was named after the daughter of a railroad official. The city has a rich history and heritage, with many historic buildings and sites, including the Idabel Carnegie Library, the McCurtain County Courthouse, and the Idabel Cemetery.
