The area experiences a humid subtropical climate with warm, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Its history dates back to the 17th century when it was part of the Matinecock Native American territory. The hamlet played a significant role in the American Revolutionary War and later became a popular summer destination for New Yorkers in the 19th century.
